The AEAS exam is more than just an English proficiency exam, it includes: English proficiency, mathematical reasoning skills, and general skills in the non-vocabulary section. The exam takes about 3.25 hours or so.
English Proficiency
Exam topics include vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, listening and speaking.
■ Vocabulary (includes a variety of question types, such as multiple choice, synonym matching, and sentence fill-in-the-blanks), with a 20-minute test time and 20-25 questions.
■ Reading comprehension (includes 2-3 articles of different types and topics. Students will answer questions in relation to the articles they read.) The test will last 30-35 minutes and the number of questions will be 20-30.
■ Writing (students are asked to write a 200-word essay on a topic that interests them and is appropriate for their age and background), with a test time of 30 minutes and a test number of 1 question.
■Listening (includes 4-6 articles of different types such as dialogues and explanatory texts, and students are required to answer different types of questions based on the content of these articles, including multiple-choice questions and sentence-fill-in-the-blanks), with an examination time of 20 minutes and a number of 20-25 questions.
■ Speaking (includes a variety of conversations, such as answering questions on familiar or unfamiliar topics, making short presentations and conversations on a topic. This test is designed to assess the breadth, depth, and accuracy of the student's vocabulary and grammar, oral fluency, and pronunciation. (Oral exams are usually recorded.) The exam lasts 10-15 minutes and consists of 3-4 questions.
Mathematical Reasoning Ability
All questions on the Mathematical Reasoning Ability exam are multiple choice. Students may use calculators and dictionaries when taking this type of exam. These aids cannot be brought into the examination room during the English Proficiency Examination.
General Ability
The General Ability exam is not restricted by the English language. The exam takes approximately 30 minutes. It is a non-verbal, multiple-choice reasoning test that reflects the student's general ability level.
